I let my life quietly slip out the back door. I said, "See you later," and never returned. It isn't something you plan, and it isn't something I'll ever be able to fully explain. I just needed to leave.
What happened isn't mine to lay out here, and what I chose to do about it doesn't need a full account either. What I do know is this: when the people around you can't bring themselves to ask if you're okay, staying gone becomes its own kind of clarity. You let go of needing anyone else's version of events to match yours, and even though leaving costs you something real, walking toward your own truth is worth more than staying for a story that was never going to include you properly anyway.
What I found instead of an explanation
I've lost something I still can't fully put into words. It surfaces sometimes, quietly, in the middle of an ordinary afternoon. But underneath that loss, I found something I can no longer unsee: I was never meant for that room. I never fit the shape it wanted from me, and I stopped trying to. My reaching for something better, for fairness, for a real seat at the table, simply wasn't compatible with how that place worked. That's not a flaw in me. It's information. When an environment can't even ask if you're alright, it has already told you everything you need to know. So I chose somewhere else to be human.
What I gained by choosing myself
All I ever wanted was a little support. What I got instead was management without curiosity, and that told me clearly which direction to walk in. So I did.
What I've gained since is harder to quantify than a job title, but it's more real. My own opinion of myself is intact. My time, mine again. My choices, fully mine to make. I look in the mirror now and recognise someone honest, someone steady, someone who likes who she's becoming. That's not nothing. That's everything.
The fear hasn't disappeared. Neither has the uncertainty, financial and otherwise. But I've stopped pouring myself into something that asked for more than it ever gave back, and I'm reinvesting that energy into balance, into rest, into hope, into building something of my own.
It turns out I'd been quietly training for this all along, without realising it. This is just me finally stepping into it.
Choosing yourself, one moment at a time
This story isn't unique, and it probably isn't even new. But what I'm building from it is for anyone else standing where I once stood: a companion for the moments the lessons show up uninvited, for the weight that sits on your chest before you've found the words for it. And for the lighter moments too, the ones where the light lands on you just right and you want someone to witness that with you.
Choose yourself. One moment at a time. Rebuild your connection to who you are, one pause, one practice at a time.
